Product description

COMPOSITION: Sterile solution containing Sulphamethoxazole 200 mg/ml and Trimethoprim 40mg/ml. Preservative: benzyl alcohol 2%.

INDICATIONS: KYROTRIM is indicated for use in cattle, sheep and pigs to treat sulphonamide sensitive infections. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract as well as wound infections and footrot.

DISCUSSION: Sulphonamides combined with dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors, e.g. trimethoprim, constitute a useful class of drugs for the treatment of bacterial infections. Dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors inhibit the conversion of bacterial dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid which is necessary for the synthesis of certain amino acids, purines, and DNA synthesis. Because they act at different points of the folate metabolic pathway a potent synergy exists between these reductase inhibitors and the sulphonamides, with an increase of up to about 10-fold in antibacterial activity, and a bactericidal action where the components individually are generally bacteriostatic. The combination exerts its selective action because of a far greater affinity for the bacterial than the mammalian enzyme. The sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim combination used in KYROTRIM has been used in a wide variety of infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly those of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts. The antibacterial spectrum of the combination is broad and includes a high proportion of anaerobic bacteria, Nocardia, Chlamydia, and Toxoplasma spp. Potentiated sulphonamides have repeatedly been shown to be therapeutically useful in treating veterinary microbial infections in both small and large animals. They have been used to treat susceptible bacterial populations (including Staphylococcus spp.) in the skin, both topically and systemically. Potentiated sulphonamides are effective against many Staphylococcal spp. and gram-negative rods and are used extensively in the treatment of canine pyoderma.

DOSAGE and DIRECTIONS FOR USE: By intramuscular injection.

  • 1 ml per 15 kg body mass daily for 5 days.
  • In cases of severe infection, the dose can be increased to 1,5 ml per 15 kg body mass.

WARNINGS: Withdrawal period: Meat: 5 days. Milk: 3 days. May cause swelling at the site of injection. Do not use in animals with liver disease. Do not use in animals with known sulpha drug sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children, animals and uninformed persons. IV administration of potentiated sulphonamides may precipitate a collapse in horses and cattle.

PRESENTATION: 100ml sterile solution in an amber glass vial.
