- CapeCross
A freeze-dried preparation of live Brucella melitensis Rev. I bacteria for the prophylactic immunisation of ram lambs against Brucella ovis
The vaccine may be used for immunisation of kids of both sexes for the prevention of Brucella melitensis infection.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
B. ovis: For the prevention of epididymitis due to B. ovis the vaccine should be administered to ram lambs at 2 to 4 months of age. It is not necessary to vaccinate ewes. Goats do not develop B. ovis infections and should not be vaccinated for this purpose.
B. melitensis: This is a rare condition of sheep and goats, limited at present to the northern areas of Namibia andpossibly areas of the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. Lambs of both sexes should be inoculated at 2 to 4 months of age.
WARNINGS
Do not slaughter animals for human consumption within 3 months of vaccination. Vaccinate healthy animals only. Keep out of reach of children, uninformed persons and animals. Under no circumstances should this vaccine be administered to pregnant animals as abortions may result. Potentially harmful to humans. Although it is believed that with ordinary handling this vaccine is harmless to man, care should nevertheless be taken not to inject the vaccine into humans. Contamination of human eyes with this vaccine should also be avoided. If this should occur, rinse the eyes repeatidly with fresh water.
In both cases a medical practitioner should be consulted. Although this product has been extensively tested under a large variety of conditions, failure thereof may ensue as a result of a wide range of reasons. If this is suspected, seek veterinary advice and notify the registration holder.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use only as directed.
Sterilise syringes and needles by boiling in water for at least 15 minutes. Do not use disinfectants or methylated spirits for sterilising either syringes or needles. Use a separate needle for each animal. The active ingredient of the vaccine is in the form of a powder or pellet in a small bottle. By means of a sterile syringe, transfer approximately 5 ml of sterile diluent provided to the bottle containing the freeze-dried vaccine. Mix until the powder is dissolved and then transfer this suspension back into the remaining sterile diluent and mix well to suspend evenly. The vaccine is now ready for use and must be used immediately. Keep the vaccine cool and avoid exposure to high
temperatures and direct sunlight. Shake the bottle well before use.
DOSAGE: 2 ml subcutaneously
EFFECTS OF THE VACCINE
No adverse reaction should occur following inoculation if used as directed. A single injection should afford lifelong immunity, but the vaccine does not afford absolute immunity in all animals.
Store the vaccine in a refrigerator at 4 ˚C to 8 ˚C. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the bottle.
